I’m not a fan of the saying ‘Curiosity killed the cat’. There’s a lot to be said for curiosity and the desire to expand experience and knowledge and quite simply to try something different from time to time .
But it can be difficult. It’s so easy to get stuck in a comfort zone, maybe it’s the same comfy clothes or recipes that you can cook with your eyes shut, maybe it’s the same yoga class or practice. Stepping out of that comfort zone requires energy and motivation. Sometimes it brings fear and uncertainty ” What if I fail?”, “What if I fall?” or even “What if I just don’t like it?”
All of these thoughts can keep us locked in our patterns and prevent us from stretching our wings or even sprouting new ones. It can be difficult but what about trying to consider what could result from a change? Maybe it will be a splash of new energy and inspiration? and maybe it will be the realisation that the old path was indeed the right one, at least for now. In this case, maybe good to note this without discarding the change entirely but just to put it – temporarily – on the back burner and then to revisit it at another stage?
If we plant the same seeds each time, then we will be eating the same fruit again and again. So I challenge you to try something new… and to be aware of how it feels and what it does for you.
For me it was scary and confronting to walk in the mountains in Poland on my own several years ago. I remember only too well standing at the head of a path which led into a dark forest and trying to resist the urge to turn back. I’m so glad I didn’t as that first walk set the tone for the rest of the week’s walking and taught me that I can persevere and I can overcome my fears.
